Uforkestra's daring epic debut offers tonal speculations on some noble traits that alien visitors to Earth might see in the human race: - Herd mentality ("The Sheep Gotta Go") - Religious fascism ("Suite: Full Contact Christianity") - Planet-choking consumerism ("Clambake") - Industrialized vanity ("Get Noticed") - Lousy manager syndrome ("Memo to a Bad Boss") - The music business ("All Washed Up-Back in Style") Inspired by found-sound pioneers like Negativland and Frank Zappa, Uforkestra blends spicy songwriting with aural montages highlighted with soundbites from an assortment of hand-picked celebrities: the renowned UFO scholar Stanton Friedman, singing icon Tony Bennett, the Zealous Reverend Frank Peretti, and various TV infomercial goons. The results are by turns hilarious or frightening. Strong musicianship is evident throughout. Doug Sprei's guitar playing is impressive in its technical reach and stylistic depth; the classical piece "No Matter What" is a little gem. Jamie Bryce is a master of electronic percussion and sampling; check out his multitextured work on "Fade to Resurrection" and rampaging drumming on "Christianity as Contact Sport"). Dirk Malavase's prodigious bass arsenal conjures up a new bottom-end color for each song and, often enough, layers of tone above the primary line -- his heavy-machinery bass looping on "One Tune On Our Minds" is wondrous to behold. Laced into the instrumental foundation is a formidable array of lyric writing, as in "Modern Transportation," "Jesus Wasn't Interested in Market Share," and "Get Noticed." (Lyrics for these and many other tunes are reproduced in full on the Uforkestra.com website.) "Unconfirmed Sightings" also features high production values, groovy graphic design, and copious liner notes to round out the sweep of elements you'll happily fetish in this unusual, original recording package.
