SCENIC SQUARE is Jason Roberts (vocals, rhodes, synths, sequences, rhythms), Jason Degelman (bass, synths, farfisa, sequences, noise), Zac Maloof (electric guitar), and Drew Shoemaker (electric guitar). The band are based out of Peoria, IL, an industrial, river town known as the location of machinery company Caterpillar's world head-quarters, Bradley University, it's "hardcore" music scene, and the resounding Vaudeville-era catch-phrase question, "will it play in PEORIA?!" Jason Roberts and Zac Maloof started SCENIC SQUARE in 1999 as a rock outfit. The band played a few local shows, then for the next few years didn't really play together at all. In 2003, after becoming inspired by electronically based bands like New Order, Radiohead, Mum and Boards of Canada, Jason Roberts started toying with electronic music. In early 2004 Jason Roberts, Zac Maloof, and Drew Shoemaker recorded THE GREY EP with the help of friend/producer, Suit & Tie Guy. THE GREY EP featured five songs Jason Roberts had written during late nights at a desolate, empty office building the previous fall/winter, including synthpop anthems "Complex" and "Rescue." After THE GREY EP's release, SCENIC SQUARE recruited bassist/synth player, Jason Degelman. In the fall/winter of 2004, SCENIC SQUARE began work on a follow up EP. Written mostly in a basement apartment in Chicago's Wicker Park, the songs on OPPORTUNITY were an obvious deviation from the previous effort, influenced less directly by synthpop, and more by ambient/shoegaze. Through the early months of 2005, SCENIC SQUARE obsessively recorded and mixed the five songs in enormous, frigid rooms, dark basements, and a converted garage-studio. Finally, in the summer of 2005, OPPORTUNITY was released. SCENIC SQUARE prides itself on their DIY approach to songwriting, recording, and packaging. Every copy of OPPORTUNITY has been lovingly hand stamped and folded by the band and friends. Check out the artist's website: http://scenicsquare.com Track List: 1. Where is the Power? 2.
