Ryan Van, Sedona, Ariz., has released his debut, independent, full-length, all original CD "Monkey."

Often described as the "black sheep" of Sedona, Van departs from the typical "bar band" and "New Age" music often associated with Sedona musicians.

Van wrote, recorded, mixed and produced all 13 songs and played all of the instruments on "Monkey," a refreshing presence in a pop-music world filled with lip synching and get-rich-quick musicians.

His unique sound, described as techno-folk-rock, brings music back to the basics with pseudo-love songs such as "If You Wanted To" and "Walk on Water."

Project songs such as "This Aint Rock and Roll" and "2004" reveal Van's more complex, electronic influences.
Title track "Monkey" is where Van really shines emotionally and artistically.

Layered, gritty vocals, mixed with the distorted spoken word on top of simple acoustic guitar chords and a subtle bass line drives home an angst most people can relate to.
