Welcome to Beyond Reach, the stunning debut album from lakes composer Jamie Sims. Join me now for a brief musical journey, exploring the compositions that make Beyond Reach a truly magical experience. We start our journey with Eskdale, following in the tracks of La al Ratty, the little railway, from Ravenglass to Dalegarth at the foot of Scafell.
Purple is a simple piano and string piece reflecting the love within a family. The third track, Ad Infinitum, or without end, reflects the beauty of the English lake district. Imagine the fells, forces and mountains that attract so many visitors to the area every year, and inspire the work of poets, artists, photographers and composers the world over.
Ellecks Eye (LXI) is a thank you to my mother for her inspiring piano playing that I grew up listening track five on this CD is Maria, written for my wife, need I say
more!.
Erebus, track six, was written as a tribute to Scott, Amundsen, Shakleton and Franklin and all the other heroes remembered and forgotten for their incredible work in
the arctic and antarctic, the shear madness, bravery and determination to attempt to conquer such a beautiful but deadly and hostile environment is unbelievable.
Beyond Reach, the title track, is the feeling of total helplessness when circumstances are beyond your control, beyond your expertise, beyond reach. The brightest star in the constellation Leo is Denebola, and can be found at the tip of the Lions tail, 36 light years away. For the nursery, Little Box of Dreams, was written to help my daughter sleep. In actual fact, the whole album will help anybody relax anyway, but this composition is especially for them.
Reason was written after riding through the whinlatter pass, I saw no reason to stop, and every reason to keep going through the fells and forest. Seven, the birthday and
month of my son, was written when he was only three months old. It captures the innocence, the love and the beauty of early life. The view of mellbeak and scale knot reflected in the glassy surface of wastwater late on a summers afternoon, was the inspiration behind shadows.
The final track is Cumara, and it is a rousing finale to bring the listener back into reality yet still retaining the beauty that is the Lake District.
I sincerely hope you have enjoyed this brief musical journey through the album 'Beyond Reach'.
