With a voice that has been melting jazz festival audiences throughout California, Karen Marguth is quickly becoming a favorite among jazz aficionados. Her second CD, "The Best Things," is a fresh collection of old jazz standards with a few surprises mixed in, including an elegant new tune by Nashville songwriter Jason Jurzak, and a bayou-inspired version of "Marie Laveaux."

Ms. Marguth's voice is singular by today's standards. Audiences are drawn to her sensual clarity, the luscious delivery of tone and lyric. Evoking memory of some of jazz's greatest voices, Ms Marguth's renditions of these jazz standards exhibit a subtle expressiveness lost in the hustle of today's music industry.

Born in Minneapolis, raised in Livermore, California, and currently living in Fresno, California, Karen has been active as a performer throughout her life. Her background includes choreographing, directing and performing in regional theatres, singing in rock, blues, folk, and jazz bands, and teaching dance and theatre in grades 4 through 12. She enjoys performing a wide variety of styles of music, being drawn primarily by lyrics, she says. "Any song that has unexpected, interesting, or simply profound lyrics draws my attention. It is the storytelling part of singing that I love best."

The musicians joining Karen on this CD are members of The Blue Street Jazz Band, also known as "The bad boys of Dixieland." Jason Wanner, on piano, has a solo CD that has been an editor's pick here on CD Baby. Jason Jurzak, on bass and guitars, is a multi-talented musician and songwriter living in Nashville. Nate Ketner, on vocals and reeds, recently moved to LA to work in the music scene there. Forrest Helmick on flugel horn, Dave Ruffner on trombone, and Rick Canfield on drums, are all music educators in Fresno.

Other featured musicians are Kevin Hill on bass, who adds a marvelous inventiveness to every tune he plays on, and Kevin Gary on guitar and mandolin, who brings a bluegrass touch to several tunes.

Karen's influences as a vocalist include EmmyLou Harris, Megan Slankard, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughn, Rosemary Clooney, Yve Evans, and Rebecca Kilgore. She also recently has begun exploring bluegrass, and is especially fond of Robinella Contreras, Allison Krauss, and Tanya Savory. Her next CD will feature some of her award-winning original tunes, along with covers of folk, bluegrass, and country tunes. Look for it here, on CDBaby!
