Portland Jazz Vocalist, Armonica, Releases New CD

January 2003 - Portland-based jazz vocalist, Armonica, has released her first CD entitled From Me To You. A veteran of several jazz venues, the singer has produced a volume of jazz standards along with lesser known works that displays her range and passion for the music. Comparing her sound to Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McCrae, internationally renowned guitarist, John Stowell, calls her a "real seeker" in her approach to her material. "Armonica is always searching for ways to challenge herself and expand her repertoire," he said. "Her passion and feel for the music evince her love of the craft."

According to northwest jazz luminaries, Armonica brings a focus, skill and energy to her work that more that more than make up for her relatively late start as a professional jazz singer. Percussionist, Ron Steen notes her fresh stylistic approach and the rich quality of her voice. "She's very much a jazz vocalist with a low, sultry sound, well-developed improvisational skills, and creativity in her interpretation and phrasing." George Mitchell, a pianist who toured for many years with Diana Ross, says Armonica is a real professional who knows how to "honor the song."

For her debut recording, Armonica chose jazz songs that reflect her love of classics like The Nearness of You and I'll Take Romance, and at the same time reveal her fascination for long-overlooked gems. "I pick songs that have an impact on me," she said. "And I work very hard to bring them to life for others by getting mentally and emotionally to the place where that song comes from. That's what the name of my CD, From Me To You is all about."

To support her endeavor, Armonica has brought together a who's who of jazz talents including bassist Ben Wolfe, known nationally and internationally for his work with Harry Connick, Wynton Marsalis and most recently Diana Krall. Also appearing on bass is Dave Captein who has worked with Jessica Williams. Together with well-known guitarist Dan Balmer, pianist Tony Pacini, saxophonist Dave Evans and drummer Ron Steen, the musicians contribute solos and accompaniment to the CD that give it depth, and promise to make From Me To You appealing to a wide audience.
