Of Karen Oberlin's CD "My Standards," Josef Woodward of Entertainment Weekly magazine wrote: "Because singer Oberlin is an artful straddler, moving gracefully between show tunes, jazz, and pop, it comes as no surprise that on My Standards the definition of standard is pleasantly fuzzy. On this velvety song set, she offers moving versions of tunes by Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, and even the theme from Valley of the Dolls. On the jazz-standard tip, she also shows a wise take on "How Deep Is the Ocean," backed by ever-tasteful pianist Fred Hersch. Her standards are high, and her ears are wide open." Karen Oberlin has a deep background in classical, jazz, cabaret, and musical theatre. The youngest daughter of two classical musicians, she competed classically as a child in upstate New York, played piano, flute and cello and performed her first role in a musical at age 6. Since then she has trained extensively, which includes graduating from Circle in the Square Professional Workshop Broadway theatre conservatory in New York, and studying voice for over 20 years. She also received her B.A. in literature and studied in France for a year, performing overseas while there. Before Ms. Oberlin's recent smash-hit debut of her Doris Day tribute called "Secret Love, a Tribute to the True Doris Day" at the Firebird Café in New York, she entertained sold-out audiences in solo shows at the Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room to launch the release of her critically acclaimed CD, "My Standards" (Miranda Music). For the past year and a half, Ms. Oberlin has been performing Off-Broadway with Our Sinatra and has recently performed a run of the show at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia. Some other New York engagements have included The Knitting Factory, the Firebird Café, Merkin Hall, and The Yale Club for the Dutch Treat Club, and she has performed nationally as well as in Europe. Ms. Oberlin has held lead roles at the North Carolina Theatre (under direction by Terrence Mann); the Palace Theatre in Louisville; and The Ordway Theatre in St. Paul. In addition to My Standards, Ms. Oberlin has released "Secret Love: The Music of Doris Day" based on her hit show, also on the Miranda Music label. Along with these solo CD's she recorded part of a never-before-produced Duke Ellington/Herb Martin musical entitled "Renaissance Man" to be released this year. Ms. Oberlin is also an actress who has appeared professionally in everything from Shakespeare to national commercials, including ALL MY CHILDREN and both independent and feature films. She currently has an award-winning film showing on the independent film circuit. Check out the artist's website: http://www.karenoberlin.com Track List: 1. And the Angels Sing 2.
