PRESS RELEASE JULY 15TH 2004 New CD from Janet Seidel "Dear Blossom" Initially inspired by seeing New York jazz and cabaret icon Blossom Dearie's performance at Adelaide's Festival Theatre in the 1970s Janet has finally recorded a selection from the famous Blossom repertoire. The idea was first floated by a Tokyo jazz record producer who has previously released several of Janet's CDs for the Japanese market. At first she was not inclined to agree as Blossom is still performing at the top of her game and she worried that it may be presumptious to be involved in such a tribute at this stage. The Japanese producer persisted though and when Australian cabaret producer Bill Stephens also suggested a cabaret show along the same lines, Janet relented and has consequently just started performing the cabaret show Dear Blossom at several leading Australian venues including the very successful Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Appropriately enough this was performed also at the Festival Theatre where so many years earlier Janet had seen Blossom for the first time. The photo on the CD cover is also from the time Janet first fell under the spell of Blossom. Janet is never content to just imitate any artist though and as always manages to find her own voice even when working on such a tribute as this. When the Tokyo producer heard the newly recorded tracks he felt his position was vindicated saying "It has Janet's own touch and very good atmosphere ......". The album is now being prepared for Japanese release in August and Janet and her quartet will tour in Japan for 10 days in October. The cabaret show Dear Blossom has enjoyed an excellent response. In the Adelaide Advertiser the reviewer wrote "Someone should send Janet Seidel flowers for her delicate and engaging tribute to a truly eccentric music talent, the ageless Blossom Dearie. She takes a representative sample from her catalogue and sings with a touch of the breathy feyness that characterises a Dearie song. ...............Seidel is a very fine singer in a very cool way with a light touch on the keys". The CD is released in Australia in mid July and the next performance of the cabaret show will be at the National Press Club in Canberra August 7th and August 14th.
