˜The Texicanos’ play americana/roots music inclusive of tex-mex, alt.country, western swing, rock’n roll, rockabilly and bluegrass genres. They are an upbeat, toe-tapping, guitar intensive stage band with melodic male lead vocals and some spine chilling father/daughter harmonies. The band members Roger Arndt, Ruby Red and Richard Baker are western Canadian musicians and ˜Southern Exposure’ their newly released CD promotes a genuine heartfelt American/Mexican border sound through both the original and traditional songs chosen for this album. The addition of Kendra Arndt’s vocals and other instrumentalists extend this sound. The music of Doug Sahm, the Texas Tornados, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Elvis, the Mavericks and Los Lobos are all major musical influences of the band. The sound of the banjo, fiddle, and bajo sexto instruments contribute to the overall party atmosphere. Born in Canada, Roger (a Vietnam veteran), came to this music while stationed in San Antonio, Texas in 1968. Born in Britain, Ruby is the alter ego of Susan Hillman, a retired visual arts professor who discovered both new and traditional bluegrass music first hand in the southern US in 1974. Richard, ex- guitarist of ˜Blue Northern’ and ˜Doug and the Slugs’, was naturally attracted by what he refers to as the ˜fromage’ aspect of ˜The Texicanos’.
