About the Starlingtons Shea (guitar & vocals) After battling a serious folk music dependency issue in the late 90s, Shea Shackelford found salvation in the arms of country music. Step 1) Shea admitted that his musical life had become unmanageable ... Step 2) Shea was saved when he came to believe that a Power greater than himself could restore him to sanity-- Hank Williams ... Step 3) Shea made a decision to turn his will and his life over to the care of Hank as he understood Him, and amazingly he's lived past the age of 30. Prior to bottoming out, Shea performed solo around DC. More recently he played in the Bluegrass-esque trio Big Blue Truck. When he's not smoking cigarettes or drinking coffee on the sidewalk, Shea can now be found playing guitar and singing with the Starlingtons. Shea also gives guitar lessons to other recovering folkies. Sarah Claire (vocals, artwork) Sarah has been singing since she could properly walk, and cut her baby teeth on some good & creepy old songs like "Beautiful Brown Eyes" that her mother sang around the house. She preferred the quiet solitude of the bookish life to the limelight, but an interest in traditional music emerged in library school where she researched the history of murder ballads. While living in the Southeast she fell under the spell of such touring acts as the Freighthoppers and the Reeltime Travelers, and was a devoted fan of local old time, bluegrass and gospel radio shows. It was not until Shea discovered her singing "Coal Miner's Daughter" at a karaoke bar on K Street last year that her transformation from ardent admirer to performer began. Sarah shares a birthday with Judy Garland and Howling Wolf and can often be seen wandering for miles around the streets of the District, singing or whistling quiet tunes to nearby birds, bugs, flowers, trees, children and hobos. Lee Benaka (fiddle) Lee Benaka, a fiddler, has been performing on Sundays at the Dupont Circle Farmers' Market in Washington, DC, since 1999. Lee also has performed at many private functions in the DC area, including art openings, fund-raisers, weddings, anniversaries, and birthday parties. Prior to that, Lee played in bluegrass and country bands in Chicago and helped teach old-time fiddle classes at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Both married and talented, he lends emotional and musical stability to Sarah and Shea's chronic self obsession and raging inner turmoil (respectively).
