With the encouragement of his parents, he began to pursue his interest in music and perform publicly at the age of sixteen. Joe's singing career began in May 1991 with a performance in Decatur, Georgia at the Anniversary Celebration of the Amoco Oil Company. In July 1991 he won the talent competition at Stonewall's in Norcross, Georgia. Following this competition, Joe continued to perform at Stonewall's on a weekly basis until July 1992. Joe performed at the ACMA awards and the Atlanta Society of Entertainers, winning the Future Star Award and was honored by having his name listed in "Who's Who in Georgia Country Music." In November 1991, Joe performed at the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame held at the Radisson Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. Joe performed at numerous benefits to raise funds for underprivileged children in 1991 and 1992. The benefits were held at Southern Comfort in Atlanta, Georgia and Blue Rodeo Café in Jasper, Georgia. He also performed at Atlanta's First Annual Horserama held at the historic Lakewood Fairgrounds. In March 1992 Joe chose four top-notch musicians and formed a band with a new country rock sound. The band called themselves Cherokee. Cherokee made their first appearance at the First Annual Salute to Georgia Country Music Radio and D.J. Celebration held on March 22, 1992. Joe and the band went on to perform weekly at Stonewall's. In 1993, Joe decided to take some time off from performing in order to hone his skills as a singer and songwriter. In 1995 Joe moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Charlotte, North Carolina. In Charlotte, he entered a talent competition at Coyote Joe's, a well-known country nightspot, and once again took first place. In September 1995 Joe was invited by one of Charlotte's leading country music radio stations, WSOC, to perform at their Annual Family Reunion in Monroe, North Carolina, where he was on the billing with Tracy Lawrence and Rick Trevino. Joe provided the entertainment at the NASCAR Barbeque on October 6, 1995 and was honored to sing the National Anthem at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 7, 1995. Joe went into the recording studio to begin working on his first "demo" in November 1995 and in March 1996 flew to Memphis, Tennessee to meet with executives at Great Big River Music. Three months later Joe returned to Memphis to record his first original song written by himself. After moving to Danielsville, Georgia in 1998, Joe spent time training horses and forming a new band. Joe Olds and the Smokin Joe Band have performed at various clubs in Georgia and South Carolina including Millennium Cowboy, Cadillac Ranch, Toccoa VFW, Statham American Legion, Bourbon Street and Night Moves. Joe performed to enthusiastic crowds at the Gene Watson Concert at Banks County High School in March 2001, and at Lula Railroad Days in Lula, Georgia on May 19, 2001. Joe opened the show for Ricky Van Shelton at Remember When Theater on August 9, 2001 and appeared at the Twenty-ninth Annual Banks County Festival in Homer, Georgia on September 8, 2001. Joe also performed at the T. Graham Brown Concert at Banks County High School on September 15, 2001. Joe again opened the show for Gene Watson in March 2002 and performed at Lula Railroad Days in May 2002. On June 22, 2002, Joe performed at Bill Anderson's City Lights Festival in Commerce, Georgia. Joe's new CD showcases his unique singing style. Joe's natural ability to paint a picture with his voice is manifest in each song. His voice rings with honesty and sincerity on the heartfelt songs, as well as with a sense of fun on the lighthearted ones. Several songs on this CD were written by Joe and are a testament to his skills as a songwriter as well as a singer.
