Joel Alan Lehman's "Pure Texan" is the artist's first CD for Nashville's Wild Oats Records, and it is a very strong debut indeed. The CD's title describes both the artist and the album well: although he now lives in Nashville, Lehman was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and most of the 10 songs on the CD refer to his home state; among them the haunting, nostalgic "Milam County", the rockin' "Gloria's Goin' Back To Lubbock", the Cajun-influenced "San Gabriel" the great Waylon-tribute song "Hero", and the bluesy title track. Lehman is a singer, songwriter and guitar player of real talent, and his music is the genuine article, falling somewhere in the gray area between "outlaw" country and the Texas school of singer/songwriters. (Tom Russell wrote the liner notes for "Pure Texan".) Produced by Steve Haggard, the CD shows Joel Alan Lehman at his best, and is sure to win many new fans for this very worthy artist.
