Don't take our word for it: Sodajerk's twangy debut album may have been the most unjustly overlooked local release of the year.

"Can't Put You Down" established this foursome as a heavyweight in the city's alt country world, with tunes like "Minutes From a Payphone" and "Make Believe" seeming to come from an alternate universe where REM was born in Memphis instead of Athens.

"You don't have to drive a truck to sing country," croons Bucky Goldstein on "Do it Again Daddy-o"; the song proves him wonderfully correct.

This could be the best original sound to come out of Pittsburgh since, well, I don't know when! The band has fused a classic rockabilly sound with a slightly modern vocal style. The lyrics are fresh too. Overall the music creates a good energy.

The songs don't drag on; Sodajerk knows how to do it, do it well and quit. It's not overwhelming, you're never bored and even the sad songs put you in a good mood. That shows true talent. Guarenteed, you'll be smiling and dancing with a beer bottle in hand.

If there is a theme to the disc, it is that love sucks, relationships are depressing, ultimately lonley experiences ending in resentment and drinking binges. And yet, the lovline like material isn't all mournful ballads and tearful goodbyes. "Can't Put You Down" also displays it's country rock inspiration. For every weepy "shoulder to Die On", there is a rocking little "Rotisserie Gold".
--City Paper Magazine

Wow! I just got back from visiting my girlfriend in Pittsburgh Pa. Just by chance we saw this band at a place called Fuel and Fuddle. We went there for some grub and lo and behold I was a happy clam. These guys, Sodajerk, are better musicians and generally have a better thing going on as compared and contrasted to Whiskeytown. I bought the CD "Can't Put You Down" and I have been happily listening to it ever since.
