SALLY BARRIS
BIOGRAPHY

WHERE IS SHE FROM?

Sally Barris is originally from Chaska, Minnesota, the youngest of five children. Her father, the late Charles Barris, was a lap steel player and taught her to play Ukulele around age five, when he discovered her love for singing and music. Her mother, Bernice Barris, soon acted as booking agent. Sally recalls her first gig, playing and singing "That Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze" for the kindergarten talent show.

FIRST BAND

After high school, Sally literally stumbled onto bluegrass music. In search of a record, Sally walked into the Homestead Pickin' Parlor in Minneapolis where there happened to be a jam session going on. When asked to sing, Sally belted out "I Fall to Pieces" and was immediately adopted by the group of pickers. They sent her home with a stack of bluegrass records and thus began her acoustic music education. One year later, Sally was lead singer and guitar player with Northern Hospitality, a progressive new grass band featuring some of Sally's original songs. Northern Hospitality won first place at the Telluride Bluegrass festival and toured the Midwest and Europe.

THE BIG MOVE

A growing passion for songwriting lured Sally to Nashville. Once there it did not take long for Sally's songs to get noticed and she was signed to Wrensong Publishing, where she currently writes. Sally has had songs recorded by Leann Womack ("Some Things I Know"), Kathy Mattea ("The Innocent Years"), Martina McBride ("Reluctant Daughter") and John Michael Montgomery ("My Christmas Wish"). She has placed in the songwriting contests of both the Lyons and the Kerrville Folk Festivals. In 1999 she recorded her first project, Reluctant Daughter, on the We record label. It was produced by Larry Michael Lee of the Ozark Mountain Dare Devils and was received with rave reviews, which brought Sally's music from music row to a wider audience of ever growing fans.

CURRENT

Collaborating with Canadian Blues guitarist and award- winning producer Colin Linden, Sally has just released her second record, Little Voice. This time Sally is putting it out on her own label; Roll Tape and Sing Records, named for the spirit in which it was recorded. Fans of her earlier work will find Little Voice a more acoustic, back to her roots record.
It was recorded live in studio with lots of slide guitar, dobro, viola, and mandolin. Special guests include Jessi Alexander, Jon Randall and Kami Lyle. Sally plans on touring the folk circuit in the U.S. and concentrating heavily on markets in the U.K. and Europe.
