At 9 years old, Ryan Holladay is already an old hat when it comes to performing. A lead and harmony singer since the age of three, Ryan found that he had a passion for bluegrass music when he received a mandolin and the family began attending festivals just a year later. However, the banjo especially caught Ryan's attention.

In December of 1997, 5-year-old Ryan was presented a Golden Era Deering Banjo as the winner of the Brian Friesen Award, which annually provides a deserving young musician with a quality instrument. After the presentation, made by Mike Snider at the Grand Ole Opry, Ryan became one of the youngest people ever to perform on that world-famous stage.

Soon Ryan was being asked to make guest appearances at festivals with such prominent bluegrass bands as the Lonesome River Band, Blue Highway and the Del McCoury Band.

Ryan's 1998 debut album, "I Want to the Play the Banjo," paired him with many of his musical heroes, including Earl Scruggs, Mike Snider, Rob and Ronnie McCoury and Don Rigsby. The title track of the album was written by living legends Tom T. and Dixie Hall.

Media and festival exposure followed. Ryan has appeared on TNN's Crook and Chase and Prime Time Country, CNN's World Beat, Nickelodeon's Figure It Out and, most recently, PBS's ZOOM. He has also performed at bluegrass festivals across the U.S., with several dates already booked for this coming season.

Ryan's second release, "Old Soul," shows a maturity of playing that the name implies. He is joined by his parents, Mark and Lisa; producer and mandolin player Bobby Clark; bassist Mike Bub; Carolina Road's Lorraine Jordan, Jason Barie and David Sampler; fiddler Laura Cash; and bassist Blake Williams.
