(Caroline Keys, Independent) With his first CD, Ryan Bundy offers his listeners a fresh sound, carefully constructed tunes and poetic lyrics. Hailing from Alaska, born in Anchorage and spending his formative years in Homer located on picturesque Kachemak Bay, Ryan’s love of music began. At an early age, he studied music and it remains a pervasive influence in his life. Ryan began playing boogie woogie piano at the age of six, followed by horn, and later, guitar. Although he now makes his home in Missoula, Montana, his Alaskan experiences have influenced his prose and music. In “Ballad of the Fishermanâ€, Ryan sings of the pull of the sea for an aging fisherman. He uses the fisherman’s hands to tell his story, “To tie the knots you need steady hands, careful eyes,†“Those strong hands, they grip the glass when the runs are coming slow,†Ryan calls upon his Alaskan roots, and through his compositions, he gives back a piece of himself. Before moving to Missoula, Ryan attended college in Philadelphia but was soon to return to the mountains of the West. While attending the University of Montana, Ryan taught himself to play the guitar and can be seen writing, singing, and playing at local establishments with his friends. At home in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana and enjoying the many artistic and cultural opportunities Missoula provides, it is here where Ryan has merged his poetry with his music. Ryan is a sensitive and keen observer. The doleful tune “Lewiston†touches on the plight of the today’s farmer, urban development, and grief over the loss of a family’s lifestyle. “Paper mill spitting’ out billowing’ smoke, “Reasons rising why the city grew and the country broke,†Vivid imagery and similes abound in his prose of nature and of the heart. “Like a valley cut by water, through a million years of stone. The softest things cut deepest to find the heart beneath the skin and bone.†It’s the memorable tunes, remarkable imagery, and striking metaphors that continue to swirl in your head long after the music has stopped that give impact to Ryan’s original music.
