Jake Beck combines smart acoustic songwriting with found sound percussion and lo-fi reel-to-reel recording techniques; he fancies himself a minimalist, but finds his once-clear and brainy ideas muddied (in a good way) by his impatient/inept perception of sound engineering. The result is The Happy Place, a project that he wrote, composed, arranged, performed, sang, stomped, recorded, produced, engineered, hit buttons, approved, released, and copyrighted. The Happy Place is jangly, disrupt, quiet, clangy, lyrical, passionate, solid, foregone, inconclusive, pretty, off-key, complicated, long, and self-righteous, and is a cog in a musical journey. Jake Beck wishes the album to admit no allegiance to fad, monetary reimbursement, or strictly musical influences, but offers no guarantees that the latter won't show through, as life and music are but an accumulation and burnished representation of experience.
