Singin' about whiskey, heartache, and bar brawls, Romi Mayes' live show has been known to make some miss their mouths when sipping their beer and is putting her on route to becoming the Joan Jett of country. Romi Mayes returned to her hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2002. She had left eight years before with guitar in one hand and thumb up on the other to travel across Canada. Now at age thirty-one, Mayes is being recognized for her raw, country roots driven sound proving that her years on the road have paid off. Her intense songwriting and edgy Americana bluegrass guitar style shows an experienced storyteller who has seen the tough road. The gritty warm vocals that layer all her songs sift through all the bull and hit straight home. Mayes has honed her skills sharing the stage with the likes of Iris Dement, Gurf Morlix, Bo Ramsey, Pieta Brown, Ricky Skaggs, Lynn Miles, Hayes Carll, Martha Wainwright, Fred Eaglesmith, Ray Condo, Camper Van Beethoven, and many more. A highlight of her musical career was when she paired up with guitar great Chris Carmichael in 2003 to form the duo Mayes and Carmichael. Carmichael is known and respected for having been Canadian bluesman Big Dave McLean's right-hand man for many years. In 2004 she formed a band called 'Romi Mayes and The Temporarily Employed' whose members included Carmichael and players from such bands as The D.Rangers, The Duhks, Fred Eaglesmith and The Corb Lund Band. Mayes then spent 2005 relentlessly touring to festivals, theatres, and venues across Canada promoting her 'Temporarily Employed' February 2005 release "The Living Room Sessions: Volume One". The album was nominated for Outstanding Roots Recording by The Western Canadian Music Awards later that year. In August 2005 in Cobalt, Ontario at Eaglesmith's Northern Picnic when she performed with Dan Walsh (who at the time was Fred Eaglesmith's dobro/guitar player). Since that time Dan Walsh and Romi Mayes have been working steadily together touring and recording. Mayes has spent well over 200 tour dates on the road since 2005's 'Living Room Sessions' album and has no plans of slowing down with the release of her upcoming new album 'Sweet Somethin Steady' produced by Texan producer Gurf Morlix. The album will be available July 2006 and Mayes has Canadian and US CD release dates planned for 2006/2007 with the dynamic guitar and steel backing of both Chris Carmichael and Dan Walsh.
