Martin W. Layman is a freelance hornist in the Northeastern Ohio area. After studying extensively with current Cleveland Orchestra hornist Alan DeMattia throughout elementary and high school, Martin won the 1982 Louis Lane Scholarship Competition in Akron, Ohio. Martin subsequently attended the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1982 and continued studies with then Cleveland Orchestra principal hornist Richard Solis. He performed as principal horn with professional ensembles including the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and the Ohio Light Opera Orchestra. After a fifteen-year hiatus from playing, Martin has more recently appeared with the Youngstown Symphony and is currently the principal hornist of the Heights Chamber Orchestra in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
