THE LANSING CONCERT BAND - YESTERDAY AND TODAY

The Lansing Concert Band is an all volunteer, ninety piece, adult concert band. This non-profit, community organization's charter is to serve Lansing and surrounding communities by providing quality musical entertainment. A classic example of the true community band, the Lansing Concert Band has enjoyed a long and colorful history.

Originally formed as a drum and bugle corps in the 1920s, the Lansing Concert Band has undergone several reorganizations. It has won many honors, including state and national VFW championships, and several Michigan American Legion Championships. The Lansing Concert Band first became associated with Lansing Community College in the 1960s. Today, Lansing Community College is the primary sponsor of the Lansing Concert Band. In turn, the band represents Lansing Community College's music department, and student/players can earn college credit.

The Lansing Concert Band's year-round activities include a traditional holiday concert, a children's concert for elementary students, and a pops concert, as well as performances for graduation exercises, mall concerts, and outdoor concerts in Frances Park. For the past several years, the band has been featured at the City of Lansing's Fourth of July celebration at Riverfront Park.

Guest performers with the band have included conductors Dr. William D. Revelli, Dr. Harry Begin, David Catron, John Madden, Donald Flickinger, and Ken Bloomquist; and soloists Alan Siebert, Trumpet; Phil Sinder, Tuba; Curtis Olson, Trombone; John Endahl, French Horn; and Patti Richards, vocalist.

From the 1920s to 2001, the Lansing Concert Band is proud of its accomplishments, and more than ever, the band is serious about its music and its commitment to the community. During this 2001-2002 concert season, the Lansing Concert Band will mark its 55th year and its 35th year as the Official Band of the City of Lansing, so designated in 1967 by the Mayor and the City Council of Lansing.
