Houston's anthem singer, Barbara Johnson Tucker is a retired manager from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, persuing a full-time ministry/career. In 1969, Barbara spent a year in New York as a cast member of the Tony-Award winning Broadway drama The Great White Hope, starring James Earl Jones. While in New York, she had her debut recital in the famed Carnegie Recital Hall and filmed several nationally-shown commercials. She has been presented at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (Sept. 2000), toured internationally and has ten self-produced recordings. Her first recording, Order My Steps, became a local favorite and won two Texas Gospel Music Awards. All hymns and spirituals, this recording, Wherever He Leads, features the last recorded performance of Ms. Tucker's Mom and Sister now deceased and also Dorceal Duckens and M. K. Steve Solesbee. Instrumentalists include Phil Hall, Jacqueline Chambers, Glenn Burleigh and Rev. Michael Pickett. In Houston, she has been a regular anthem soloist for the former Houston Oilers, Houston Rockets, and was priviledged to sing at the state funerals of Mickey Leland and Barbara Jordan. Her sensitivity, sincerity, and spiritual conviction is embodied in an unusual vocal of classical and gospel and can be described as no less than enchantment.
