Jade CDs are widely heard on national and fine music stations throughout Australia, and are recognised as a valuable resource by educational authorities as being uniquely representative of the work of Australian composers. They are manufactured in limited runs of 500 and, as stocks are therefore limited, may be regarded as collectors' items! All Jade CD covers are distinctive. Most Jade CDs have an anthology format and include works by several composers. It's great to have these CDs on offer for a wider audience at CD Baby!

"AUSTRALIAN FANFARE" JADCD 1070 Works by: Dulcie Holland, Eric Gross, Colin Brumby, Ann Carr-Boyd, Robert Allworth, Ian Shanahan. Duration: 59.07

Summary:

More details:

ERIC GROSS (B.1926)

Track 1 - FANFOPUS Op,13 (1973) Commissioned jointly by the Australian Broadcasting Commission and the Australasian Performing Rights Association, with the support of the Music Board, Australian Council for the Arts, to mark the opening of the Sydney Opera House this Fanfare was first performed at the Opera House by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras on October 9th, 1973. Subsequently, it was recorded by the same orchestra, conducted by Patrick Thomas (as heard here.

Track: 2 - "GEBURTSTAGSGRUSS (Birthday greeting for JSB.(Bartlett)" (1985) for Organ, Op.145. This brief organ work was composed in 1985 to mark the tricentenary of Johann Sebastian Bach's birthday. It was first performed on July 11th of that year in Saint Andrew's Chordal, Sydney, by Canon Lawrence Bartlett. The music is based upon the notes Bb,A,C,B (Bach in German). The musical form is that of a three-part fugato, building up to a short and climactic final stretto.

DULCIE HOLLAND (1913-2000)

Tracks 4 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 - Masterpieces in Miniature for Piano:
SEA MURMURS (from a publication of CASTLE MUSIC entitled FIVE STORY PIECES) composed in 1981.
SHADE OF SUMMER (1992) is dedicated to ROBERT ALLWORTH: Composer and producer of this compact disc. The music develops from a single Iine of notes with sustained pedal. This idea is developed using the full sonorities of the piano, before retreating to the opening of a single line of notes.
ROMANTIC SONG (1976) is one of a set of Ten Study Pieces (published by ALLAN'S) each of which addresses some aspect of piano technique. Romantic Song, with its singing melody in the right hand over triplets in the left, is a study in playing 2 against 3, a skill which every pianist has to acquire.
PUPPET SHOW, FLYOVERS, MAN ON STILTS, WINTER'S LANDSCAPE, & CRABS (all compositions from the year 1976). These miniatures are from a publication by ALLAN'S MUSIC entitled TEN STUDY PIECES.

ROBERT ALLWORTH (6. 1943)

Track 3 -PRELUDE FOR THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. Composed in 1990 this PRELUDE features dramatic effects on the organ presented wonderfully and with alacrity by organist LAWRENCE BARTLETT. In 1854 on December 8th, Pope Plus IX proclaimed the DOCTRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, and in 1950, on August 15th, ~ Plus XII proclaimed the DOCTRINE OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. Both dogmas to be believed by all the faithful.

Track 15 - NOCTURNE FOR A PENSIVE EVENING (1996) Completed on 11th November 1996 and dedicated to PENSHURST GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL, the composition uses the techniques of French impressionism and Viennese serialism. The music is played by Penshurst Girls' High School student ELIZABETH GRAY.

Track 16 - ANTHEM (1993) Anthem is the title of one of philosopher AYN RAND'S books. The composer feels that the music captures the mood of Ayn Rand's Philosophy of Objectivity, Individualism and Enlightened Self Interest, which helps to separate the artist from the masses. Anthem is the second piece in a Trilogy of pieces, ATLAS SHRUGGED, ANTHEM & THE FOUNTAINHEAD, composed by ROBERT ALLWORTH in memory of AYN RAND.

ANN CARR-BOYD (b. 1938)

Track 13 - FOXTROT (1993). Specially written for ADRIAN HOOPER'S ensemble, the SYDNEY MANDOLINS. After the composer's success with her composition FANDANGO, Ann Carr-Boyd composed another lighthearted dance piece in art form entitled FOXTROT. The music at once engages the listener in a pleasant musical experience. The work is dedicated to the SYDNEY MANDOLINS and ADRIAN HOOPER.

IAN SHANAHAN (b. 1962)

Track 17 - SOLAR DUST" (1988). Commissioned by ADRIAN HOOPER for performance by his brother PAUL HOOPER. The piece is intended to evoke the image of a "SPACESCAPE" painting, in which the planet Saturn is observed through the ice crystals and other matter which comprise its rings. The pitch B natural, with microtonal deviations, comprises much of the basis of the music. PAUL HOOPER, who plays the mandolin this recording is known as Australia's leading mandolinist. He has been soloist with the Sydney Symphony and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Paul and his brother Adrian were the first mandolinists to be listed the International Who's Who of Music.

Track 18 -ECHOES/FANTASIES" (1984) for Bass Clarinet, Vibraphone and Tubular Bells, received its first performance in a Seymour Group concert at the Old Darlington School, University of Sydney on 28th June 1984. The work begins in a lively and ecstatic manner, giving way to an extremely slow, calm feel, intended to evoke images of lonely and remote parts of Australia, before returning to the original manner of the opening. NIGEL WESTLAKE, who is an accomplished performer and composer of much new music, plays the Bass Clarinet on this recording. MICHAEL ASKILL, Australia's leading percussionist, plays Vibraphone and Tubular bells.

COLIN BRUMBY (b. 1933)

Track 12 - ANZAAS FANFARE (1980) Commissioned for the ANZAAS CONFERENCE held in Brisbane in 1980.
Track 14 -SCHERZO (1988) SCHERZO was commissioned by the MUSIC TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION OF NSW with sponsorship from the AUSTRALIAN BICENTENNIAL AUTHORITY and the NSW BICENTENNIAL COUNCIL to celebrate AUSTRALIA'S BICENTENARY 1988.

This Compact Disc commemorates previously released material on JADE compact discs produced by ROBERT ALLWORTH throughout his career as a producer of JADE recordings, which after many years resulted in him being awarded an OAM.
Cover Photo: Producer ROBERT ALLWORTH (on left) receiving the ORDER OF AUSTRALIA MEDAL from HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR OF N.S.W., GORDON SAMUELS at Government House, Sydney 1/5/97. The music on this recording presents an overview of the producer Robert Allworth's idea of presenting works in various styles by Australian Composers, from the more conservative composition to the Avant Garde. Thus the Jade series of compact discs presents anthologies of music by Australian Composers.
