A Note from the Artist: When looking for appropriate music for my baby, I had a difficult time finding music that was sonically sound. Most classical music that I encountered had complex orchestration that was too overpowering for newborn ears. However, wanting to reproduce the positive impact that classical music has on the development of young children, I have created motifs that are more conducive for newborn ears. With Baby In Mind is designed for babies from birth to toddlerhood. My baby is now a year old, and this project has had a profound impact on her. While listening in the car, she hums her favorite parts. I cannot believe how much With Baby In Mind has affected her creative and intellectual development. Jermaine Powell BIO Jermaine Powell is one of the most innovative and diverse song writers to date. Her talent extends far beyond the task of tacking members of the alphabet onto poster boards of pitch and rhythm. Jermaine expresses the truths of life whether happy, sad, or just plain ordinary. Simply stated, she cares about thoughts and feelings-yours, mine, and those of people she'll never meet. Her debut project, With Baby In Mind, is a tribute to newbie mothers and their babies. As a child Jermaine was influenced by all forms of music ranging from the provocative lyrics of Sting and the Police to the sometimes controversial arrangements of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. These experiences are the hub of her musical diversity. Never allowing her preferences to be defined by what a little black girl from Chicago should like, our lives are all the more enriched. Desiring to constructively harness her musical ambition, Jermaine chose the flute as her primary instrument, and like the experiences of most young artist, this path was filled with critics, cynics, and pessimists. Nevertheless, she marched forward, right onto the campus of Howard University. At this institute of higher learning, she played all types of music ranging from classical to straight ahead jazz. Since that time she has played the flute professionally in various forums and locations including local churches, the National Black Caucus, and the Carter Barron. Open to the experience of self evolution, Jermaine has chosen to expand far beyond the safe and theoretical instructions of her experiences in academia. She has chosen to archive the condition of her soul by writing music that touches the heart-yours, mine, and those of people she'll never meet. Powell has indeed spread her wings and flown away to another level of music creativity. Her uncomplicated tunes with relaxing melodies encourage lighthearted play. "Awakenings" brings up images of sunbeams dancing through the window in early morning. The room gradually fills with light, and the little one wakes to sheer musical delight. "Joelle" and "Everlasting Love," both lullabies, are filled with luscious harmonies and pure melodies that suggest warmth and love. The strings provide soothing sleepy time feelings while the glockenspiels remind all of us of the child within. The melodic yet simplistic vocal "Your Voice" conveys unconditional love and the tender union that exist between mother and baby. He loves to sing and dance, but his movements to music typically consist of jumping around and twisting which is common for his age. Upon hearing "Awakenings" for the first time, he started dancing differently ... slowly and with arm movements. He appeared to be moving with the music instead of just expending energy.
