Let me start by saying your hair looks fabulous today. And I ain't just saying that. I put The Witch Doctors together in 1996. It started out as a Tuesday night 'drink beer and piss off the neighbors' kind of pro musician jam at my crib. I rounded up a bunch of pals from three different Detroit area working bands that wanted to play for kicks on their off nights. I hadn't played pro in ten years. I dropped out of the music business completely in the mid '80s but got bitten by that 'where's the beer and what time do we get paid?' bug early on in The Witch Doctors' life cycle. One thing led to another and being the benevolent dictator and type A personality I am, the band took gig-worthy shape and started working every weekend. And we worked a number of week day nights too (at one point, five nights a week--wives and girlfriends simply loved that...). I lost count but I think the guys on this cd make up the tenth iteration of my band. Some Witch Doctors got it, some didn't (I've hired and fired some of the best.). The Witch Doctors on this project get it. Doug Wolgat and Harry Rodman got no holes in their souls. Doug and Harry know what time it is. They are strong players with good attitudes-a very rare combo in the whacked out world of the music business, a business eclipsed in insane monkey-logic nature and twisted inner workings only by that of the crack whore business. Nobody in this band overplays. The Witch Doctors are about the groove. That's what it's all about. Always has been, always will be about the rollin' barroom science groove. The Witch Doctors band is in very large part an extension of my radio show, The Bone Conduction Music Show. The Witch Doctors do bone conduction music. Greasy music with a backbeat, it's the real deal. I thank Doug and Harry for helping me push forward the white-hot blues juice in smoke filled hellholes weekly. It's a pleasure to work with these loveable little knuckleheads. Keep up the good work, guys. You both deserve raises. And special thanks to Renee and Maureen for not hiding their car keys and letting them out on Friday and Saturday nights. I think you will not only like but also dig deep the 14 tunes we are tossing into your music hopper. It is a long and arduous journey toward the ultimate music goal of dying penniless and insane. The Witch Doctors are up to the task. Let me take this opportunity to encourage you to support REAL music every chance you get. Get out and see live music at least once every two weeks if not more often. Hit a corner bar, park yourself in a naughahyde booth or on a bar stool, get a beer or two and hang with the band. Do NOT request a song, unless it's a song that the band does as one of their own. Let the band do the unique thing that is theirs and theirs alone. Listen to and appreciate what's in front of you, what's going on at the moment--not what you think should be going on. You start screaming 'Play some Skynard, man!!' or 'Play some Stevie, dude!!' and I'll whip your ass with car antenna. Don't make me come over there. Support barroom science every chance you get. Now if you'll excuse me I have to do the boogaloo.
